Diagnostic Ultrasound

Diagnostic Ultrasound is a safe and accurate imaging modality used to assess many soft tissues in the body

MSK Diagnostic Ultrasound

Diagnostic Ultrasound is a safe and accurate imaging modality used to assess many soft tissues in the body, including ligaments, muscles, tendons, and nerves. One of the unique benefits of ultrasound evaluation is the ability to assess tissues dynamically and compare them with the unaffected side.

When combined with a clinical examination, this imaging modality enhances the accuracy of the physiotherapy assessment, leading to more specific and targeted treatments. This practice is also known as point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).

During your appointment, the physiotherapist will gather specific and relevant information about your case and perform a clinical examination before conducting the ultrasound examination. This approach differs significantly from a typical diagnostic ultrasound exam you may have experienced before, greatly enhancing the accuracy of the overall procedure.

The examination is performed by a fully qualified physiotherapist, accredited by relevant regulatory bodies, who has undertaken further specialized education in Diagnostic MSK Imaging.

Some common conditions that ultrasound can help identify include (but are not limited to):

1.

1. Shoulder: Rotator cuff tears, tendinopathies, and bursitis

2.

2. Elbow: Golfer's and tennis elbow

3.

3. Foot and Ankle: Ligament sprains, Achilles tears, and tendinopathy

4.

4. Wrist and Hand: De Quervain's tenosynovitis and other tendinopathies

What We Do Not Assess:

– “Lumps and bumps”

– Vascular problems, such as Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT)

– Abdominal, cardiac, genital, lung conditions/problems

– Inguinal or abdominal hernias

– Neck, thoracic, or lower back conditions

– Intra-articular pathologies (such as ACL injuries), due to the limited penetrating ability of ultrasound

For these conditions, other imaging or diagnostic modalities may be more appropriate, or consultation with specialists who have undergone more focused training is recommended.
